Long Term Disability

“Total Disability”
Most long term disability plans will consider “total disability” as meaning your complete inability - because of an accident or sickness - to perform all the duties of your job for the first two years of disability.

After the first two years (25 months for some bargaining units and excluded employees), disability means your inability - because of accident or sickness - to perform the duties of any gainful occupation for which you are suited by education, training, or experience, and still earn at least 75 per cent of the current rate of pay of your regular job.
LTD and Other Disability Income.

If you become totally disabled and are entitled to any other disability income as a result of the same accident or sickness for which benefits are being received, the benefits under most plans will be reduced by 100 per cent of such other income.

Other disability income includes:

  • Any amount payable under any Workers’ Compensation Act or law or any other similar legislation
  • Any amount received from group insurance, wage continuation or pension plan of the employer providing disability or retirement income
  • Any amount of disability income provided by any compulsory act or law
  • Any periodic primary benefit payment from the Canada or Quebec Pension Plans or other similar type of plan of any country to which the disabled employee would be entitled (you must apply for Canada Pension Plan disability benefits or other such benefits when applying for LTD)
  • Any amount of disability income provided by any group or association disability plan to which you might belong or subscribe
  • Any amount received for welfare by you for the same period
