The British Columbia Persons with AIDS Society (BCPWA) exists to empower persons living with HIV/AIDS through mutual support and collective action. The consumer-driven agency has over 3,800 HIV+ members who collectively determine the direction and activities of the organization.
The BCPWA is concerned about the confidentiality implications of the BC government's decision to contract out the administration of Medical Services Plan and Pharmacare to MAXIMUS.
Beyond the general risks associated with Americans accessing our confidential medical information, HIV+ British Columbians have an additional concern: they are restricted from entering the US strictly because of their HIV status. Once American authorities gain access to BC health records, the FBI and other US government agencies may gain access to the names and personal information of all HIV+ Canadians. |
