BC Government and Service Employees' Union

The BC Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU) is one of the most diverse unions in British Columbia, representing approximately 60,000 public sector employees in more than 550 bargaining units.

In February 2004, the BCGEU filed a petition seeking an injunction to prevent the Campbell government's plans to privatize the "back office" functions of BC's Medical Services Plan and Pharmacare. They asked the court to rule that outsourcing the administration of Medicare is a violation of the BC Medicare Protection Act, the Canada Health Act, and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. The case was presented, but rejected, by the BC Supreme Court on March 23, 2005. BCGEU is still considering their next course of action in this case.
