Major Tax Bumble Could Affect Hundreds of PWAs

A small mistake could mean that hundreds of PWAs on income assistance will pay more income tax than they should. In early February the BCPWA Advocacy department began receiving frantic calls from PWAs who had received incorrect taxation slips from the Ministry of Social Development and Economic Security. It appears that the dietary allowance and schedule C Health benefits that people receive has been included as income their income tax slips distributed by the ministry, possibly since 1997. Put simply, these benefits should not be considered income and the result is that people are paying more taxes than they should. The ministry is aware of the mistake and has asked people to call the T-5007 project so it can be fixed. The phone number is (604) 660-1313. If you live outside of Vancouver call enquiry BC at 1-800-663-7867 and asked to be transferred to the T-5007 project at the above number.
